Will Smith punches Chris Rock, Ariana DeBose wins Best Supporting Actress and Jane Campion wins Best Director for ‘The Power of the Dog’ during the 2022 Oscars.

The 2022 Oscars was held Monday, March 28 Manila time. It took place in Los Angeles, California. As live events slowly return in the midst of an ongoing pandemic, the ceremony saw many memorable moments that happened during the telecast.

Will Smith punches Chris Rock onstage and later apologizes

Will Smith won his first Oscar for his role in the movie King Richard but what made headlines was him punching Chris Rock. The comedian poked fun of Will’s wife Jada about her bald look and this did not sit well with Will who came up and punched him, saying not to make fun of his wife.

Unknown to many, Jada has suffered alopecia areata, which causes hair loss. In 2018, she opened up about it saying she was initially terrified of dealing with it. But in 2021, she got more candid, saying she is now embracing it as seen in an Instagram video.

“Mama’s gonna have to take it down to the scalp so nobody thinks she got brain surgery or something.
Me and this alopecia are going to be friends … period.”

Will was later seen talking with stars such as Tyler Perry, Denzel Washington, and Bradley Cooper after the punch. He also apologized to the Academy for his actions.

Jane Campion becomes the third female to win Best Director

In what could be a good closing for Women’s Month, Jane Campion nabbed the Best Director award for the movie Power of a Dog. She is the third woman to win the award since Kathryn Bigelow for The Hurt Locker and Chloe Zhao for Nomadland.

Campion was previously nominated for the movie The Piano in 1993.

The Godfather movie celebrates 50 years of cinema

Al Pacino and Robert De Niro reunited with Francis Ford Coppola at the awards ceremony to celebrate the debut of The Godfather, which has become one of American cinema’s classics.

The Oscars celebrate 60 years of James Bond

Tony Hawk, Kelly Slater, and Shaun White came out to remember the first of Bond films, Dr. No, which debuted in cinemas in 1962.

Ariana DeBose wins Best Supporting Actress for West Side Story 61 years since the first film

Ariana DeBose has become known for her role of Anita in the 2021 adaptation of West Side Story and she made history for winning the Oscar for the same role 61 years after Rita Moreno played the role. Moreno also won the same category during her time.

Aside from Anita, Ariana became the first openly queer colored actress to win the award.

Troy Kotsur wins Supporting Actor for CODA

Actor Troy Kotsur cements his status for the Best Supporting Actor, becoming the second deaf actor to win an Oscar. His co-star Marlee Matlin won the Best Actress award in 1986 for the movie Children of A Lesser God.

CODA makes history in the Best Film category

Following Troy Kotsur’s win as Best Supporting actor, the cast and crew of CODA won the biggest prize of the night – Best Picture. The film won all its nominations that night.

Time to celebrate films thanks to the 2022 Oscars!
