6 TV Shows That Scream Girl Power

These TV shows have been empowering many women and little girls while we were growing up

Many female characters have made their mark on television history and through the years, more TV shows have been showing empowered women to empower our girls. There are still some shows that typecast women in sympathetic roles (aka poor, harassed, and all), but these seven shows have shown a woman’s strength and courage.

In celebration of Women’s Month 2022, we look back at these shows that made a mark in the Philippines and internationally.

She-Ra: Princess of Power

After the success of He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, She-Ra was created to attract a female audience in the late 80s. In the storyline, Adam discovers that he has a twin sister, Adora, who was taken away. In his mission, he meets her, and Adora was given the Sword of Truth, where Adora discovers her true identity. Together, she transforms into She-Ra and with the people of the Great Rebellion, they are on the mission to free the people of Etheria from Hordak and his evil forces.

She-Ra later returned as She-Ra and the Princesses of Power in 2018 with a different storyline and ran for 5 seasons.

Charmed

The Power of Three sisters – Prue, Piper, and Phoebe became a hit thanks to their magical powers, of telekinesis, time manipulation, and seeing the future. After the death of Prue, Piper and Phoebe discovered the existence of a half-sister Paige, who can orb objects by calling them out.

Charmed became one of the most popular shows of the time and was also revived in 2018 which currently has 4 seasons.

Jessica Jones

Marvel has produced a number of TV shows featuring female superheroes to empower girls and on that list includes Jessica Jones. Originally known as an unnamed classmate of Peter Parker, Jessica gained her powers of strength, limited invulnerability, and flight after she was exposed to radiation that killed her family.

The show has been part of the Marvel Multiverse and is currently has 3 seasons. Actress Krysten Ritter, who has been playing the role since its debut has also made several crossovers in other mini-series of the Multiverse.

Charlie’s Angels

Charlie’s Angels was considered one of the most popular TV shows starring women in history. Originally compromised of Farrah Fawcett, Jaclyn Smith, and Kate Jackson, the show was later brought to the big screen with Drew Barrymore, Cameron Diaz, and Lucy Liu as the new Angels.

In 2019, Charlie’s Angels returns again in the movies this time with Kristen Stewart, Naomi Scott, and Ella Balinska are the new generation of Angels.

Encantadia

In 2005, GMA introduced to Philippine television the world of Encantadia, where it was ruled by the 4 sanggres or princesses and keepers of the elements. Aside from being sanggres, they are also warriors, read to defend the kingdoms from their enemies the Hathors and Etherians.

In 2016, the show returned with a prequel or retelling of the story and was introduced to a new generation of fans.

Beautiful Justice

TV show Beautiful Justice has empowered girls Alice, Brie, and Kitkat to get together when they discover that their respective loved ones are involved in a bloody PDEA operation, forcing them to solve the mysteries behind it.

No More Damsel in Distress Moments

With more meaty roles for women onscreen, we are all looking forward to seeing viewers see women in a different light. It’s time to portray women as fighters not just damsels in distresses that need to be rescued by men on screen.
