What the extended school year means for parents

We’re in for another month of online learning

Yes, the nightmare that is online learning isn’t over just yet. In fact, with the delay of the vaccines coming into the country, we might have to come to terms with the fact that online learning will continue till next school year.

Although there are countless benefits to in-person schooling, it’s important to roll with the punches — especially since we’re left with no choice but to do so.

We’re now more connected to our child’s education than ever

While we’ve had little to no choice about our involvement in our child’s online learning, on the flip side, it feels very much like a good thing. Finally, we know EXACTLY what our kids are learning in class. Not only that, it’s been easier to talk to and connect with teachers — for both parents and students.

Also, because of the circumstances, teachers have taken their lesson plans to the next level, making them as interactive and engaging as possible. And that’s always a good thing.

Kids have more time to work on their weaknesses

Online learning has taught both parents and teachers that a one-size-fits-all approach doesn’t always work. And the DepEd’s extended school year announcement also includes dates for interventions (aka extra help) to help students attain required essential learning competencies.

There’s no doubt that online learning has been tough for everyone. But with this extended school year order coming into play, it shows that parents can look forward to a more flexible educational system — something we’ve all been dreaming of for awhile.
