Still don’t know who Blackpink is?

Okay moms, dads, titos and titas, here is the low down on the girl group that Gen Z is all hyped about

“Let’s kill this love.” You’ve probably heard it but never really knew who sang it. You’re also probably wondering why every Gen Z kid, including yours, seems to know the song. They’re lyrics of the song, Kill this Love, by the massively popular South Korean girl group, Blackpink.

Up until last year, I only knew Blackpink as the Korean group teens danced to. Turns out, they are a pretty big deal. They were the first Korean girl group to headline Coachella as well as the highest-charting female Korean Pop girl group on the Billboard 200 and the Billboard Hot 100. Their Kill This Love EP peaked at No. 24, and its title track peaked at No.41. Blackpink’s documentary, Light Up the Sky, is Netflix’s first K-pop original content and is also the most viewed Netflix documentary in Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, South Korea, Hong Kong, and Thailand. The group has also been guested by famous talk show host, Jimmy Kimmel.

Who are the Blackpink girls?

Get to know the Blackpink girls.

Blackpink debuted in 2016 and rose to international fame by 2018. Formed by YG Entertainment (same management of 2NE1), the group includes members Jisoo, Jennie, Rosé, and Lisa.

JISOO (Lead Vocalist, Visual)
Aside from her vocal prowess, this multi-talented lady can also play the drums and piano. She can speak Korean, Chinese and Japanese

JENNIE (Main Rapper, Lead Vocalist, Face of the Group)
Known as the YG Princess of the Group, Jennie was the first member to be revealed. She often wears Gucci clothing, which earned her another title, Human Gucci. She is fluent in Korean, Japanese, and English.

ROSĖ (Main Vocalist, Lead Dancer)
She was born in Auckland, New Zealand, and raised in Melbourne, Box Hill, Australia. In 2012, she moved back to Korea. She is known for her unique voice and slim waist. A couple of days ago, her solo music video was released. It now has 111,464,712 million views.

LISA (Position: Main Dancer, Lead Rapper, Sub-Vocalist, Maknae/Youngest Member)
This Thai native is the only one who got accepted in the YG Thailand 2010 Auditions. She is known for LILI’s films, a series of dance videos, as well as her rapping skills. As of this writing, LILI’s FILM #3 has the most views at more than 59 million.

BLINK fever

Blackpink owning the stage.

If BTS fans are called ARMY, fans of Blackpink are called BLINKs — and there are millions (or billions) of them around the world. Just to give an idea on how popular they are, Blackpink is also the first music group and Korean act to have three music videos accumulate one billion views each on YouTube. Currently, “Kill this Love” has 1.2 billion views. How crazy is that?

What makes them so special?

Admittedly, this 30-something tita does listen to BlackPink. I particularly love Love Sick Girls and How You Like That because the beat and melody is addicting. Their songs make you feel good. Considering all the stress that this pandemic is bringing, it’s nice to listen to songs that send a ton of good vibes. Pair this with their street fashion and awesome dance moves (so good!), and you’ll be reminded of Britney Spears during her peak, or perhaps Janet Jackson strutting her stuff on the iconic “If” video.
