Global Day of Parents 2022: 4 Ways We Can Honor Ourselves This Year

Every June 1, the United Nations celebrates Global Day of Parents to honor parents and their commitment to their children all over.

In case you didn’t know, Global Day of Parents is a United Nations observance celebrated every first of June since 2012 to commemorate parents and their commitment to children worldwide. It’s a special day that recognizes the value of parents and parenthood. Because as we all know—being a parent is one of the most universal but also most challenging experiences.

“Appreciate all parents throughout the world.”

This year’s theme is all about appreciating parents and the struggles they endure. It endorses the sacrifices they make for their children in the hopes of giving them a good life. And though we would never make our children feel like they owe us for the sacrifices, it’s nice to feel valued and validated.

Ways to Celebrate Global Day of Parents

Since Global Day of Parents is an official observance initiated by the United Nations and is similar to celebrating Mother’s Day or Father’s Day, here are different ways you can honor yourself.

1. Familiarize yourself with Global Day of Parents

There are many resources online that talks about this official observance. You can even visit the UN’s website for more information.

2. Exchange notes with other parents

Having a parent support group is so important so that you know you’re not alone. You can exchange stories, values, and insights to become even better parents to your children.

3. Watch a movie with the family about parents and kids

It’s a family day after all, which means you can gather the whole family to watch a movie. There are many films under different genres that feature the relationships between parents and children. Have toddlers? Maybe you can try watching Meet the Robinsons, The Incredibles, or Turning Red. Teen children might appreciate The Parent Trap, Freaky Friday, or Cheaper By the Dozen. Meanwhile, your millennial kids can enjoy something a little more mature like Father of the Bride or It’s Complicated.

4. Treat yourself

Shove those mom and dad guilt feelings aside and remind yourselves that you can’t pour from an empty cup. So give yourselves a pat on the back in the form of getting a massage, going on a staycation with the whole family, buying that bag you’ve always wanted, or simply having a date with your partner to affirm each other that you’re both doing a good job.

Happy Global Day of Parents!

Parenthood is both a difficult and rewarding experience that includes laying the foundation for children as well as nurturing and equipping them with the skills necessary throughout life. We parents protect our children and make countless selfless sacrifices to ensure their growth. So whether you’re a mother, father, or guardian—we salute you!
