Here’s What We Know About Corbevax, the New Vaccine

New patent-free COVID-19 vaccine, Corbevax, is showing promise to get everyone vaccinated at a lower cost.

Looks like Omicron and the Ihu Variant will soon be things of the past. Corbevax, a new vaccine has been declared safe in a US-clinical trial. They’re also patent-free, meaning they’re cheaper to produce. With the US government and the Indian government’s approving its release, it means our families will have better chances of getting vaccinated. If you want to know more about the new vaccine, here’s what we know so far.

What makes Corbevax different from the other vaccines?

While all vaccines teach the body how to build an immunity against COVID-19, the pathways differ. The current existing ones like Pfizer or Moderna deliver instructions to the body. It’s like us giving our kids the instructions on how to do their work for homeschool but not the items to use themselves. Corbevax on the other hand introduces a spike protein from COVID-19 directly into our body so our immune system can devour it, memorize it, and build more immunity. It’s kind of like how we give our kids building blocks, Lego, or K-Nex, and let them be the ones to figure out how to make it work.

Where did this vaccine come from?

Created in Texas Children’s Hospital Center for Vaccine Development at Baylor College of Medicine, Co-Directors Maria Elena Bottazzi and Peter Hotez originally made the vaccine for SARS — COVID-19’s cousin — in 2003 to curb the possible outbreak. Fortunately, the said outbreak didn’t happen and the research sat on the backburner. Come 2019, they readjusted Corbevax to combat the new SARS or the one we know as COVID-19. Using yeast, the two created a variety of spike proteins for Corbevax to use. You can check out the video below as the researchers explain how the vaccine works:

What can Corbevax do for my family then?

Corbevax, because it introduces the material directly, we’re more assured that our bodies will develop a defense. Our immune systems work a lot better when they take on the exact material which is what Corbevax gives. It’s the same technology we’ve been using for our kids’ Tetanus, Hepatitis, Measles, Smallpox shots for years. And so far, those vaccines have been keeping our kids safe and healthy from those deadly diseases.

The Light at the End of the Tunnel

Corbevax being a low-cost, patent-free vaccine shines a beacon of hope that COVID-19 will be a thing in the past. A lot of times, vaccination efforts slow down because the vaccines themselves are expensive and hard to bring in. But with this new vaccine, we’re hoping that it fulfills what it was made to do. And when it does, we can finally put the pandemic behind us and our kids can go out and enjoy the outdoors again.
