Miel Pangilinan Opens Up About Being Part of the LGBTQ+ Community

In an Instagram post, Miel Pangilinan, daughter of Sharon Cuneta and Kiko Pangilinan talks about celebrating her first Pride Month.

Miel Pangilinan, daughter of Sharon Cuneta and outgoing senator Kiko Pangilinan, has come out as part of the LGBTQ+ community. Miel made the post late Tuesday, June 14, on Instagram.

In the post accompanied by photos of her hugging a rainbow flag, she wrote: “This June, I am celebrating my first pride month as openly and publicly queer.”

“I really can’t figure out the words to say right now. It’s a really emotional and freeing time. And I’m endlessly thankful to my close friends and family who have supported me and shown me love as I’ve grown and explored my own gender and sexual identity.”

Miel Pangilinan: “It truly feels cathartic.”

Miel continued that while some may find her opening up about her sexuality to be silly, she felt so much freedom.

“I know it sounds silly. But posting this truly feels cathartic,” she wrote. “I’ve spent so many sleepless nights over the span of much of my childhood and teenage life worrying and wondering about a plethora of things surrounding my identity. And it only feels right that I post this at the point I’m in now where I’m comfortable enough in who I am and who I love and how I choose to present. it’s kind of a full-circle moment for me, in a way.”

She added that she’s grateful for the people who have come before her about being proud of the community and knows there’s still a lot of work to be done when it comes to equality.

“We’ve got a long way to go in terms of our fight for equality. But that is not to discredit the work and sacrifices made by queer Filipinos throughout history and in the present day, who have done so much to make our voices heard and have helped us go farther than where we were before.”

She also notes that she has a lot to learn more about the community. And that she’s willing to listen, read, and interact to understand more. Especially from those who have been at the forefront of the fight for the community.

Kakie and her cousins show support

Kakie, Miel’s sister, commented on the post and showed lots of love and support.

“I Love You,” Kakie wrote followed by “BEEEE WHO YOU aAAARE FOR YOUR PrrRrrRrIIIIIDE.”

Judy Ann Santos, who is a good friend of their mom wrote, “We love you, Yellie!”

Miel’s cousins such as Kiana Valenciano and Gab Pangilinan, as well as Sam Cruz, daughter of Sunshine Cruz, posted words of encouragement and heart emojis as well.

Sharon reposted the same photo with a short message. “All I will say is that I love all my children and will support them in their lives and choices. I am proud of my children and ALL MY CHILDREN ARE PERFECT. I love you, my Miel.”

Miel is the second child of Sharon and Kiko. She has an adopted brother, Miguel, and has one older sister, KC, Sharon’s daughter with former husband Gabby Concepcion.
