ICYMI: Peppa Pig Introduces Lesbian Couple on the Show

In an episode aired in the UK, one of the characters, Penny, introduced her guardians as a pair of lesbian polar bears.

Peppa Pig, the beloved children’s TV show recently introduced its first lesbian couple in an episode called Families in the United Kingdom. In the episode, Penny, one of the characters in the show, shared that her guardians are lesbian polar bears.

“‘I live with my mummy and my other mummy. One mummy is a doctor. And one mummy cooks spaghetti,” Penny said before it shows the three of them eating together.

The episode came after years of campaigning from families for the show to be more inclusive with some families launching a petition two years ago to the creators of the show. This is the first time a couple from the LGBTQ+ community is featured.

Mixed reactions on Peppa Pig introducing a lesbian couple

The episode drew mixed reactions from viewers. Some hailed the episode while others were not happy at all. The Safe School Alliance in the UK tweeted: “Really nice to see an age-appropriate representation of same-sex couples on @peppapig with Penny and her two mummies. We are loving One mummy is a doctor and one mummy cooks spaghetti. I love spaghetti.”

Since its broadcast in 2004, Peppa Pig has become one of the most watched TV shows by children around the world. The show is currently in 180 countries and translated into 40 languages.
