This mom gets real about her New Year’s resolutions for 2021

I’ve never been a huge fan of making New Year Resolutions. My tendency to break them (within the first quarter) probably has a lot to do with that, but mostly because I strongly believe that change can happen any time throughout the year. But I get it. The turnover from one year to another symbolizes new beginnings, and the hypothetical slate is wiped clean.

Naturally, as the year comes to an end, we reflect on the months that have passed and envision a new story of progress. We set motivational goals with the intention of improving our quality of life as we prepare for yet another trip around the sun.

But what are the chances of us keeping our resolutions?

But if we’re being completely real, what are the chances that these resolutions are nothing more than pipe dreams of productivity and brand new subscriptions to the latest fitness apps? Well, now is not the time to add unnecessary pressure onto your plate, and it would make more sense if we keep things simple.

So, to close out the year, we’re listing down a few small things we can change to make life better. I’m talking about realistic and attainable goals! And we’re sharing them with you because we could all use some realistic resolutions to set the tone for a brand new year.

Realistic resolutions we can all keep

1. I will no longer yell at my kids. I’ll just master the art of the mom-glare (you know what i’m talking about) and speak sternly through gritted teeth.

2. I shall commit to making more time for myself. The kind that doesn’t entail staying up until 2am binge watching Netflix. Although, that sounds nice too.

3. I won’t pressure myself to adhere to fad diets. The carb diet is still a diet. No pressure though.     

4. I will give other people a shot at parenting my kids. I meant my partner. Global pandemic, remember? However, if we lived with other relatives, I’d most definitely not feel bad about having them take the kids off my hands for a couple of hours. See #2.

5. I will drink more water. For every glass of wine, I shall start drinking 2 glasses of water.

6. I will refrain from judging other parents for their choices. Out loud, anyway.

7. I will no longer hide my snacks. I’ll just leave it out in the open and tell everyone not to touch it instead. That’s practice in communication.

8. I’m going to stop cleaning up after my kids. They can learn how to do it themselves, which promotes independence!

9. I will only serve my children organic goods. Once I sell all my organs on the black market.

10. I will be more patient with my partner. Unless he’s been in the bathroom with his phone for over 20 minutes. Because that’s just ridiculous.

11. I will get more rest. Is sleeping while the kids play considered neglect?

12. I will cut back on my children’s screen time. I mean, I don’t have to watch what they’re watching. That’s what the new iPad is for. 

13. I’m going to quit swearing. Yeah, that sh** is gonna be hard. 

There you have it— 13 attainable tasks that are simple and realistic! And like I said earlier, I believe that change can happen anytime throughout the year, so if you mess up on one of them, just start right over! So, grab a pen and paper, and write these down. If you have anything else to add, go right ahead, you overachiever you. You’ve already got the mindset for an awesome 2021.
