Roi Vinzon in the Eyes of His Daughter Lala

Roi Vinzon is known for playing tough and action-packed roles on television and in film. But behind that image, who is he when not in front of the camera? His daughter Lala tells Modern Parenting all about it.

Actor Roi Vinzon has made a name in the action genre—playing leading man or villain in several films. His most recent appearances include playing Eduardo in FPJ’s Ang Probinsyano, Giovanni in To Have and To Hold, and Alejandro in Agimat ng Agila.

But beyond the tough image on television and in films, Roi Vinzon is a family man. Modern Parenting recently chatted with the actor’s daughter—singer and Binibining Pilipinas candidate Isabela “Lala” David Vinzon—on who he is as a father.

Roi Vinzon’s reminder for Lala in showbiz

Lala says that her father has always reminded her to work hard especially since she entered showbiz. “Ang una niyang sinasabi palagi is the right values. The way you handle people, it’s not all about yourself. Make sure that you’re counting everyone sa mga journey mo sa life. It takes a village to be successful. You should always be proud of the team that supported you all the way.”

The Voice Teen runner-up adds, “Always be humble but at the same time, protect your name, protect your image—dahil maraming taong nakapaligid sa iyo. So be careful.”

As an action star, it’s easy to get intimidated by his status. But for Lala, Roi Vinzon has a side people rarely see—that of being a loving husband and a gentleman.

“A lot of people expect na medyo strict si Papa dahil kontrabida roles ang mga pineplay niya. Pero mas nakakatakot si Mama and si Papa yung lumuluhod kay mama,” Lala chuckled, referring to her mom Jen.

“It’s shocking to everyone na si Papa yung isa sa mga pinakamabait na tao at pinaka-supportive. Unexpected yung pagiging humble and yung pagiging matatakutin niya sa mga babae. Kaya very respectful siya.”

Living up to the expectations

Since she started showbiz at 15, Lala is aware that people will compare her to her dad. But like any parent, he always reminds her not to take the shortcut to be successful in her craft.

“Ever since ayaw ko talagang pumasok sa showbiz lang ng basta basta. Now, I am still competing kahit nasa showbiz na ako. I still want to continue the challenge that I was given when I was 15. And the feeling of being challenged is something that makes me more developed. It builds the values that I consider for myselfso mas lumalalim. Yung mga perspective ko sa buhay mas lumalawak. That’s why I always keep myself energized dahil madami pa akong gustong gawin.”

Lala also said that she’s not living up to the expectations of people. “I’m just living up to my own expectations of myself.”

As a daughter, Lala is very close to her dad. When she was young, she saw her dad on television shot in one of his shows and was traumatized by it. He had to explain to her it was just a role.

“Imagine you’re only five or six years old and you saw your dad being tortured or shot in films and he died. In all of the movies na ginagawa niya, palagi siyang namamatay bida man or kontrabida. Kaya kahit katabi ko na si papa and namamatay siya sa TV, siyempre papa ko iyon, mahal ko iyon,” she said.

Roi Vinzon the family man

When asked how her dad raises her and her siblings, Lala reveals he’s a passionate man. “He’s a passionate father. Hindi mo ineexpect that from him kasi a lot of people are saying na macho siya, brusko. Siyempre a lot of people say na babaero kasi action star nung mga panahon nila. But isa siya sa pinaka hands-on dad.”

“And I am really happy na kami yung pinipili niya maging sa trabaho. Kasi kahit nagtratrabaho, mas lagi niya kaming pinipili.”

So who is Roi Vinzon in Lala’s eyes? Lala shares, “Roi Vinzon is vulnerable. Roi Vinzon is the strongest person ever dahil he’s already in that age where many people could give up or retire but he’s still working for our family. Maraming nagsasabi na hindi na kailangan magtrabaho but he’s thriving to give us a good life.”

Artista man yan o hindi, he wants fathers to realize that pantay-pantay lang tayo. Pareho tayong mahal sa pamilya. At wala siyang special treatment sa kahit sino man sa amin. My family grew stronger because of him. Him and my mom are the glue of our family.”
