WATCH: Roselle Nava’s Son Rafa Joins The Voice Kids Philippines
Rafa Tan, son of singer Roselle Nava, performs his mom’s classic song “Bakit Nga Ba Mahal Kita” and gets a turn from Martin Nievera.
Rafa Tan, son of singer Roselle Nava, is following his mom’s footsteps as he performed his mom’s song “Bakit Nga Ba Mahal Kita” during the blind auditions of the Voice Kids Philippines, which aired on Sunday, February 26.
Prior to the performance, Rafa, 10, shared that he started singing at around 2 or 3 years old. “I started with nursery rhymes. Then I started performing at school.”
Roselle, who gained prominence in the 90s, shared that Rafa’s teacher was impressed when he would sing. “Mga 3 years old, nabubuo na niya yung Lupang Hinirang. So ngayon, siya pa din [kumakanta] sa national anthem.”
The “You” singer also recalled the time Rafa did one play and everyone was surprised he knew how to sing and do blocking at the age of 4. “At a very young age, makikita mo na may love siya and passion for performing.”
Asked what piece of advice she shared with her son in terms of performing, Rosell highlighted the importance of expression. “Hindi naman kailangan perfect lahat ng tono. But the emotion should be real and should be felt by your audience. So in every song that you do, it should be felt from the heart.”
Martin and KZ’s surprised reaction
Martin eventually turned his chair for Rafa despite the boy sounding nervous. When Martin and KZ asked where his mom was, Roselle appeared and both got surprised.
KZ, who is a fan of Roselle, could only utter “Oh My God” when she saw her appear on stage. Martin also had the same reaction.
“Anak mo?” Martin asked when he approached the two of them and she said yes. “Buti na lang umikot si Kuya Martin!” Roselle said.
Roselle and Rafa eventually did “Bakit Nga Mahal Kita” together and got warm applause.
After the performance, both KZ and Bamboo commended Rafa for knowing his mistakes and assured him that he’ll be in good hands under Martin’s training.
The breeding ground of stars
The Voice Kids Philippines returned for its 5th season last February 25. The show is hosted by Bianca Gonzalez and Robi Domingo. Bamboo alongside KZ and Martin are the judges for the season.
Some of the singers who came from the Voice Kids include Lyca Gairanod, Darren Espanto, JK Labajo, and Elha Nympha. All of them have made names in the music industry.
The Voice Kids Philippines airs every Saturday and Sunday on TV5, Kapamilya Online Channel, and A2Z.
