5 Things Every Mom Wants to Eat After Giving Birth

Nine months of not eating any of these might be too long for some moms!

If you’re planning to visit a mom who just gave birth, you might want to bring them something they’ve been craving for a while now but couldn’t eat while they were pregnant. Here are five things moms want to eat right after delivering their baby.

Things Moms Want to Eat After Their Baby is Born

Sushi and Sashimi

First on the list would be everyone’s favorite Japanese food. Pregnant moms can’t eat sushi, sashimi, or any raw or undercooked seafood. This is because it can expose their growing baby to mercury, bacteria, and other harmful parasites.

Runny Eggs

Up next — raw or undercooked eggs like runny or poached eggs can carry disease-causing organisms like Salmonella bacteria, which can cause food poisoning. And because pregnancy temporarily weakens the immune system, pregnant women are particularly vulnerable.

Cold Cuts and Cheese

Since pregnant women are 18 times more at risk of infection compared to everyone else, doctors can be quite strict about the things they eat — including deli meat and cheese. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that pregnant women not consume deli meat because it can carry the listeria bacteria. This can cause food poisoning, vomiting, and sickness.

Meanwhile, soft cheeses like brie, camembert, and goat’s cheese should be avoided because these are made with mould. They also can contain listeria, which can harm the unborn baby.

Caviar

Like all the others, pregnant women are discouraged from eating fish roe, fish eggs, and caviar as well. This is because of the risk of listeria and other bacterial contamination.

Coffee and Tea

Depending on their doctor, some pregnant moms are discouraged from drinking caffeine. According to the American Pregnancy Association, caffeine is a stimulant. It increases blood pressure and heart rate, both of which are not recommended during pregnancy. Moreover, caffeine increases the frequency of peeing. This causes a reduction in body fluid levels and can lead to dehydration. Lastly, caffeine crosses the placenta to the baby. Although moms may be able to handle the amounts of caffeine in their bodies, their babies don’t have the enzymes needed to metabolize caffeine just yet.

These are just some things moms want to eat!

The postpartum period, also known as the fourth trimester, can be a challenging time for many moms. Bringing them something they’ve been craving for a while now can surely help uplift their mood. It can even take the load off planning their menu for the day!
