Timeline: Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck’s Road to the Aisle

After a long wait and failed marriages, Bennifer, aka Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck finally got their happy ending.

After two decades, Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck got married in Las Vegas over the weekend. The “Love Don’t Cost A Thing” singer confirmed it herself in her newsletter.

Since they got back together in 2021, the couple has been open about being together again—even bringing their kids to award shows and performances. Here’s a quick timeline of the love story that has captured the world since the beginning.

2002: The meeting and Gigli

Ben and Jennifer first met while making the movie Gigli. The movie, which came out in 2003, didn’t do well back then. But it would be the start of a beautiful relationship. At that time, Jennifer was still married to her second husband Chris Judd. The two divorced and she and Ben got together after.

November 2022: The first engagement

Jennifer and Ben got engaged with the Argo director proposing and giving a 6-carat radiant-cut pink diamond ring. It was also around this time that the music video “Jenny from the Block” debuted. Ben appeared in the video where paparazzi photographs showed snippets of their relationship.

2003: The media frenzy

Bennifer continued to dominate the media with every camera snapping their moves—from red carpet appearances to regular outings. In various interviews through the years, the two admitted that the scrutiny on their relationship pressured them so much—with a lot of hate even thrown at Jennifer.

That year also saw another movie they made—Jersey Girl.

September 2003: Bennifer calls off the wedding

In September of that year, the couple announced that they were postponing the wedding due to the intense media interest. They were reportedly scheduled to marry on September 14.

2004: The break-up

After postponing their wedding, the couple announced in early 2004 that they decided to part ways. Despite the break-up, the two have remained respectful of each other in various interviews they made through the years.

2004: Jennifer Lopez moves on with Marc Anthony

Following her separation from Ben, Jennifer married singer Marc Anthony, whom she dated back in the ’90s. The two have twins, Max and Emme, born in 2008. They eventually separated in July 2011 with the divorce being official in 2014.

2005: Ben Affleck marries Jennifer Garner

Ben eventually married actress Jennifer Garner, who was his co-star in Daredevil. The couple was together from 2005 to 2018. They have 3 children—Violet, Seraphina, and Samuel. Both have since been co-parenting their kids.

2021: Rekindling the romance

In 2021, rumors circulated that the two were spotted together again. This was finally confirmed when Jennifer Lopez posted photos on her Instagram in July with Ben. Early that year, she had just broken up with long-time fiancé Alex Rodriguez.

In September, they walked together on the red carpet of the Venice Film Festival followed by another appearance in October.

2022: More red carpet events and the engagement

The couple has appeared in various events including the Marry Me event in February and the iHeart Radio Music Awards, where Jennifer Lopez was given an award. Ben was spotted with her daughter Emme in the audience.

April 2022: Engaged again

Jennifer confirmed the news of her engagement to Ben in her newsletter.

July 16, 2022: Finally married

After a long wait, Jennifer and Ben finally sealed their relationship in Las Vegas with their kids present to witness their love for each other.

“So with the best witnesses you could ever imagine, a dress from an old movie and a jacket from Ben’s closet, we read our own vows in the little chapel and gave one another the rings we’ll wear for the rest of our lives,” Jennifer Lopez wrote in her newsletter.

“When love is real, the only thing that matters in marriage is one another and the promise we make to love, care, understand, be patient, loving, and good to one another. We had that. And so much more.”

She ended the newsletter by saying: “They were right when they said, ‘all you need is love’. We are so grateful to have that in abundance, a new wonderful family of five amazing children, and a life that we have never had more reason to look forward to. Stick around long enough and maybe you’ll find the best moment of your life in a drive-through in Las Vegas at twelve-thirty in the morning in the tunnel of love drive-through, with your kids and the one you’ll spend forever with. Love is a great thing, maybe the best of things—and worth waiting for.”

The newsletter was signed as Jennifer Lynn Affleck.
